Bernarda "Bernie" Wong founded the Chinese American Service League (CASL) in 1979.  This Chicago organization provides social support services from early childhood development through elder care.  CASL has built a senior living center and a community center where a diverse range of programs are held for both recent immigrants and the generations born in America.

From the beginning Bernarda sought to both open up the Chinese community and preserve it's cultural heritage.  Bernarda was the first asian appointed to the Boards of the Chicago Public Library and the United Way.

CASL is both comprehensive and inclusive in its scope.  Bernarda's concern spans well beyond the Chinese community.  Early in her career in social work she was the Director of a Head Start Day Care program in an African-american community. She has earned the respect of and awards from organizations such as the Trailblazer Award from Rainbow / Push Coalition, the Distinguished Community Leader Award from Mayor Richard M. Daley, and the Champion of Change award from President Obama's "Winning the Future" initiative.

Bernarda Wong grew up in Hong Kong and came to the United States to attend Briar Cliff College in Iowa.  She also earned a Master degree from Washington University in St. Louis.  She has served on Asian Advisory Councils for Chicago Mayors and Illinois Governors.

Bernarda is know for her intense desire to help others realize their dreams.  Bernie and Esther Wong will retire from CASL at the end of this year.  Thank you for your service to us all!
